When Sorrow Feels Like a Second Skin
By the Pace with Grace editorial team
Key Verse · Psalm 42:3 (NIV)
“My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, 'Where is your God?'”
Grief can feel like a shroud, a second skin that you can't shake off. It's the weight that presses down on your chest, the fog that clouds your mind, the ache that echoes in your soul.
The Psalmist knew this feeling. He wrote about tears being his food, his constant companion. He was surrounded by people who questioned his faith, who asked where his God was in the midst of his sorrow.
“My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, 'Where is your God?' These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.”
But here's the thing: the Psalmist didn't stop at his grief. He remembered the times when he felt God's presence, when he worshiped with joy and praise. He held onto those memories, even when his current reality felt dark and uncertain.
You can do the same. You can hold onto the memories of better days, of times when you felt God's presence, when you knew you were not alone. You can pour out your soul to God, even when it feels like He's far away.
