Unpacking the Weight of Unforgiveness
By the Pace with Grace editorial team
Key Verse · Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV)
“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”
Unforgiveness is a weight that's easy to carry at first, but slowly it becomes a burden that's hard to bear. It's the memory of a past hurt, the resentment that still simmers, the fear of being hurt again.
Jesus talks about forgiveness in the context of prayer, of relationship with God. If we don't forgive, we can't be forgiven. It's not about earning forgiveness, but about receiving it, and passing it on.
“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”
Forgiveness doesn't mean what happened was okay. It means we're choosing to release the hold it has on us. It means we're choosing to trust that God is bigger than our pain.
The weight of unforgiveness can be a symptom of deeper issues, like shame, anger, or fear. It can be a sign that we're still healing, still growing.
