Beyond the Horizon of Our Plans

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

We make plans, we set goals, we dream big. But what happens when the future doesn't unfold like we expected?

The writer of Proverbs knew a thing or two about uncertainty. He didn't live in a world with GPS or Google calendars, but he knew that even with the best planning, life can take unexpected turns.

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

Proverbs 16:9

This verse isn't about God being a cosmic puppet master, controlling every move we make. It's about surrender, about trusting that even when our plans fail, God is still working.

So what does it look like to trust God with our plans? It means being open to changes in direction, to unexpected detours and unexpected opportunities.

God, I'm prone to making plans and trying to control the outcome. Help me trust that You are establishing my steps, even when the future feels uncertain. Give me the courage to surrender, to trust that You are working even when I don't understand. Amen.

When this hits in real life.
